This article is written on the backdrop of 25 years of women’s reservation. Despite the provision of 50% reservation for women, they are still used by menfolk of the family and party for achieving different objectives.
There are true stories from Nagpur, Bhandara and Chandrapur which were collected during the election of gram Panchayats in October, 2017.
Now that women are aware of the provision of reservation and their role as elected representatives, still they are not encouraged to contest the election. Men and women have different parameters as elected representative and also as contestant. If a woman loose then the family don’t spare her for the expenses made for election. Her views, opinions, thoughts, willingness to fight the elections are never considered. Each woman mentioned in the article has a different story of how she is being used by husband and other male members of the family, sometimes thus women also feel that since they are being used as Proxy, then why to make efforts to discharge the duties of elected representative.
It is not the women and men alone but it is the entire society, the social, cultural and economic situation which needs to change to support the women in the electoral bodies.
